Reflections from Month of the Rise Within Program

Discovering the Self – Building Awareness and Intention

By Akanksha Sen

The Rise Within program began with a simple intention — to create a safe and reflective space where people could pause, look within, and rediscover themselves. Over the past four weeks, that vision slowly took shape within our WhatsApp community of 115 members. What started as a group of strangers became a circle of seekers — each bringing their own story, emotion, and aspiration into the conversation.

The theme for this first month, “Discovering the Self – Building Awareness and Intention,” set the tone for what would become an inward journey of growth. Our aim was not to teach, but to guide; not to prescribe, but to help participants listen to the quiet wisdom that already lives within them.

Week One – Setting Intentions, Finding Voice

The first week focused on the essence of self-development — intention. We began with a simple yet powerful reflection: “One Goal, One Sentence.” Participants were invited to name one personal goal for their self-growth journey and share it with the group.

What emerged was deeply moving. Many expressed a desire for greater self-confidence, better emotional balance, and more authentic communication. These reflections revealed how universal the yearning for self-understanding truly is. Although the group was diverse — mostly women above 40 and men above 45 — the themes were strikingly similar: a need to reconnect with self-worth, compassion, and purpose.

This activity set a gentle rhythm for the month. People began to speak not as professionals or parents or partners, but as individuals meeting themselves anew.

Week Two – Learning to See Ourselves

In the second week, we took our first collective step into self-awareness through a live session. Using the prompts “I am good at… I value… I want to improve…” participants reflected on their personality, values, and strengths.

While only a few shared openly during the live discussion, the reflections that followed on WhatsApp carried depth and sincerity. It was a reminder that awareness doesn’t always shout; sometimes, it whispers quietly through words written late at night or emojis sent after reflection.

Many began recognizing long-overlooked strengths — empathy, honesty, resilience — and noticing areas where they wanted to grow. It was the week where self-awareness moved from concept to lived experience.

Week Three – Understanding Emotions

By the third week, the group’s energy had begun to shift. Participants were becoming more open, and trust had started to form. We explored emotional intelligence through a creative activity called “Emoji Mood Story.” Each person described their week using three emojis and a short story.

What unfolded was both lighthearted and profound. Smiles, sighs, tears, and laughter filled the chat as people used simple symbols to articulate complex emotions. For many, this became the first time they had expressed their feelings without fear of judgment. The collective honesty brought a sense of relief and belonging.

I noticed how humor began to emerge — not as avoidance, but as release. Participants shared that even reading each other’s reflections made them feel “lighter” and more connected. Emotional expression had begun to translate into emotional healing.

Week Four – The Art of Presence

The final week was devoted to mindfulness — learning to be present with what is. The “5 Senses Pause” activity invited everyone to stop for a moment and notice one thing they could see, hear, feel, smell, and taste.

The responses were beautifully simple: the sound of birds, the warmth of sunlight, the aroma of morning tea, the softness of a pillow. Yet, in that simplicity lay transformation. The group’s tone grew quieter, calmer, and more grounded. People were no longer just sharing what they did — they were sharing how they felt being alive.

This closing week saw the highest engagement, showing how mindfulness practices can draw people inward gently, without pressure or expectation.

Growth, Connection, and Learning

Across these four weeks, engagement steadily grew from hesitant participation to vibrant reflection. Participants who were once silent began sharing voice notes and written reflections. The WhatsApp format proved unexpectedly powerful — it gave participants space to think, respond, and connect in their own time.

The growth wasn’t just in numbers. It was emotional. Participants learned to name their feelings, to pause before reacting, and to appreciate their own strengths. The journey from self-awareness to self-acceptance had begun.

As a facilitator, what stood out to me was the collective courage it takes to look inward. The participants reminded me that healing and awareness are not linear processes — they unfold slowly, through small acts of honesty and shared presence.

Reflections Moving Forward

Month 1 has been a foundation, not a finish line. The group has discovered its rhythm, and a sense of belonging has begun to grow. For the coming months, our focus will be to deepen this connection — introducing journaling spaces, peer reflections, and accountability partners to help participants continue their inner work.

There is a quiet beauty in watching people rediscover themselves — one reflection, one breath, one pause at a time. Rise Within is not just a program; it is becoming a shared journey of awareness, kindness, and growth.

As I look back at this first month, one thought stays with me:

“Awareness is the first act of self-care — and once we begin to see ourselves clearly, change follows naturally.”
